How to install, step by step

Takes about two minutes. No computer experience needed.

On a Mac

  1. Click the Download for Mac button above and wait for the download to finish (about 100 MB).
  2. Click the downloaded file (CHIEFMATE.dmg). It is in your Downloads folder, or click the arrow at the top-right of your browser to find it.
  3. A window opens showing the CHIEFMATE icon. Drag the CHIEFMATE icon onto the Applications folder in that same window.
  4. Open your Applications folder and double-click CHIEFMATE.
If your Mac asks "CHIEFMATE is an app downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it?" Click Open. This is a routine question macOS asks about every downloaded app. The message also tells you Apple has already checked CHIEFMATE for malicious software.

On a Windows PC

  1. Click the Download for Windows button above and wait for the download to finish (about 80 MB).
  2. Click the downloaded file (CHIEFMATE-Setup.exe). It is in your Downloads folder, or click it at the top-right of your browser.
  3. The installer runs on its own and puts CHIEFMATE in your Start menu and on your desktop. No administrator password is needed.
The installer is signed by STEM Maritime Systems LLC, so Windows opens it normally. If Windows shows a blue confirmation screen, click "More info" and then "Run anyway."

On an iPad or Android tablet

There is no separate tablet download. CHIEFMATE installs straight from your browser as a full-screen app, no app store needed. It uses your regular subscription and needs an internet connection (the desktop app above is the fully offline option).

  1. iPad: open stemmaritimesystems.com in Safari and sign in. Tap the Share button (the square with an arrow pointing up), then Add to Home Screen, then Add.
  2. Android tablet: open the site in Chrome and sign in, then tap the button below, or choose Install app from the Chrome menu.

The first time you open it

  1. Have an internet connection for the first launch. CHIEFMATE downloads its chart and publication library (this can take a few minutes, like loading charts aboard before getting underway).
  2. After that, everything works completely offline: at anchor, offshore, or with the WiFi off.
Your data is safe across updates Your logbook, charts, vessel profile and settings are stored separately from the app and are kept when you update or reinstall. When a new version is available, the app offers it to you. Nothing installs without your say-so.
